The term Hosted desktop has been a growing term used to describe a remotely situated desktop accessed through network resources that make them appear to be a physical desktop computer. The growing need for work life balance is what has been driving the development of different technologies that implement this flexibility.
Hosted Desktop are also called Hosted Virtual Desktops. The advantages of these remote desktops include the following:
- Provide the employees the ability to work from home through any device that provides the platform
- Easy integration of remote offices
- Quick deployment of enabling infrastructure for new hires
- It reduces the pressures on IT budget and reduces the manpower required to support physical machines
- Improved business agility which in turn enables the business executives to respond to the ever-changing demand of the information technology sector
How do you access Virtual or hosted Desktops?
To access hosted desktops, client software is required on the device from which the desktop will be connected from. The following tools are available:
Citrix client: Citrix is a client server application. This means that it has software that you need to install in two places, one at the originating side and the other at the receiving end. Citrix provide a thin client that offers a remote connection and management interface to gain access to a remote computer. The user is required to provide logon credentials and validation is done through back end server. Once validation is complete, the a view of the hosted desktop is presented. Interestingly the software provides the capability to respond to the user local keyboards giving the user a complete user experience that feels like a normal office environment.
